2008 Southern
Shine Crawl Harlan, KY
Memorial Day weekend the club headed down to
Harlan, KY for the Annual Southern Shine Crawl. The weather was
great. If you haven't been to Harlan yet it's worth the
trip. From Toledo, OH it's a 7 1/2 hours drive. The
trails can challenge any rig. There are forest roads to extreme
rocks. In two full days of wheeling we did not see anywhere
near the whole park. The park is free and open 24/7.
We did run Rail Bed, Upper, Middle and Lower Rock Gardens.
Next time there are many more trials to run. There is also a
larger cabin we could try to get that is off the main path.
We stayed in the cabins right off Trail 45. Nothing fancy but
clean and convenient. We cooked breakfast and dinner each day
in front of the cabin and ate lunch on the trail. There was
never a shortage of food. At night the kids grilled Smores on
the fire.
Andy and Shelley were able to test their "new" Jeep Rubicon.
Tim made great use of his skid plates both days. We were lucky
and had no major carnage, just a sway bar link and a winch line on my Jeep.
Based on the comments I heard we will be visiting Harlan, KY again. Maybe
next time we can get more people to make the trip. We had five Jeeps
and 15 people on this trip.
